Speak Truth To Power
Typography
Speak Truth to Power is a university project exploring how typography and traditional printmaking can communicate a powerful social message. Inspired by John Boyega’s speech at the 2020 Black Lives Matter protest in Hyde Park, the project translates selected words and phrases into a bold typographic composition.
Developed through typographic experimentation and printmaking, the final outcome combines bold hierarchy, colour and the tactile qualities of letterpress to reflect the strength and emotion of the original speech.

Selected words from John Boyega’s speech were translated into a bold typographic composition exploring struggle, equality and achievement. Condensed typography, scale, spacing and alignment create a strong hierarchy and emphasise key words.
Development
Early experimentation explored composition, hierarchy, colour and overlapping type, developing the initial digital concepts through to physical printmaking and the final outcome.
Printmaking Process
The design was developed through hands-on letterpress experimentation, exploring how physical type, colour, ink and texture could add character to the typography.
Final Outcome
The finished poster combines bold typographic hierarchy, colour and the tactile qualities of letterpress to create a direct visual response to Boyega’s words.
